Superintendent's Weekly Update 11-12-21

“The Douglas Public Schools offer diverse learning experiences that meet the academic, social, physical, and emotional needs of all students. We provide a safe, supportive, and challenging learning environment in which students may achieve academic success and personal growth. Decisions are made in the best interest of students.”

Hello,

COVID Vaccine Clinic Ages 5-11

Thank you to those that took our brief survey earlier this week. I am working with the Douglas Board of Health and the State to schedule a clinic. Once there is more information, I will share it with you.

Conferences:

This is just a reminder that we will have parent teacher conferences next week. Building principals will send out information regarding the schedules in their weekly updates. This year we are giving families the opportunity to either attend in person or via Zoom. We hope this increases opportunities for families to engage with teachers in order to help our students succeed.

Wellness Committee:

Each school district in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is required to establish and operate a School Wellness Advisory Committee. Standards for the establishment of this committee are mandated by M.G.L. c. 111, s 223, 105 CMR 215.000. The committee shall meet at least four (4) times per year and should include at a minimum representatives including school nurses, school nutrition and physical activity staff, community agencies serving youth, parents, students, school committee, representatives of local boards of health, school physicians and local health care providers.

Over the course of the next year this Committee’s work will focus on the following:

  1. Updating School Committee Policy

    1. ADF - SCHOOL DISTRICT WELLNESS PROGRAM

    2. JLCCB - LIFE THREATENING ALLERGY POLICY STATEMENT

  2. Health Education and Services

  3. School Nutrition

  4. Physical Education

  5. Social and Emotional Wellbeing of All

We will meet on the following dates for the remainder of the year in order to establish district wide goals in these areas:

December 13, 2021 @3PM

February 7, 2022 @3PM

April 11, 2022 @3PM

June 6, 2022 @3PM

If you are interested in being a part of this committee or if you have any questions please contact me at pvieira@douglasps.net.

COVID Resource Guide:

Thank you to our nurses who created this COVID Resource Guide for families. This guide contains contact information for our schools and nurses, testing services, what to do if your child is ill, is COVID positive or is identified as a close contact. Click on the link for more information

COVID Dashboard:

Attached is a link to our COVID Dashboard that will be updated weekly. Unlike last year where I sent our letters every time we had a COVID positive case, I will not do that this year. This Dashboard will provide you with weekly numbers by building. We will continue to reach out to close contacts and also to families if they have been exposed to a presumptive positive student.

Respectfully,

Paul Vieira, Ed.D.

Superintendent
